Noosa Boardwalk

Sunshine Coast, Australia

Information

A remarkable 400-metre boardwalk on the Sunshine Coast’s iconic Noosa Heads has reopened following a major refurbishment. The upgrade spans from Little Cove to the entrance of Noosa National Park, perfectly complementing the region’s status as both a World Surfing Reserve and a UNESCO biosphere reserve.

Designed by architect Grant Calder of Flexure in collaboration with Noosa Shire Council, the project prioritised minimal environmental impact during construction and long-term use. The boardwalk’s gentle curves accommodate the natural terrain, preserving nearly 99% of the existing coastal rainforest.

Why Accoya?

Accoya was selected because it delivers exceptional dimensional stability. It resists rot, warping, shrinking, and swelling, while offering lightweight durability and barefoot-friendly thermal properties that prevent splintering even under harsh coastal sun. It also boasts impressive sustainability credentials, its FSC® certified, Cradle to Cradle Gold, and non toxic. It also comes with an industry-leading 50-year above-ground warranty.

Impact

The boardwalk received the Regional Green Space Award from the Australian Institute of Horticulture and multiple honors from the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia Queensland (IPWEAQ) and the Queensland Master Builders Association (QMBA), including Project of the Year and recognition for environmental and tourism facility excellence Tod Consulting.

This beautifully integrated structure now offers locals and tourists alike a serene, sustainable journey through Noosa’s treasured coastal landscape—merging design, durability, and environmental stewardship.

Seven Years On

More than seven years after its completion, the Noosa Boardwalk continues to embody the vision of its creators - delivering enduring beauty, functionality, and environmental harmony under Queensland’s 300 days of sunshine each year.

The Accoya timber has gracefully weathered while retaining its structural integrity and natural charm, confirming the foresight behind the design and material choice.

This low-maintenance landmark still provides a safe, serene, and sustainable pathway for the community, showcasing how thoughtful engineering, quality construction, and durable materials can stand the test of time.
