Gondola Deck

Perched over 2,000 meters above sea level,the Pursuit Collection Banff Gondola observation deck on Sulphur Mountainoffers breathtaking views of the surrounding Canadian Rockies. Visitors reachthe summit via a scenic gondola ride, ascending over 600 meters before steppingonto a spacious Accoya wood deck that wraps around the summit building.

Supplied by Upper Canada Forest Products,the Accoya decking materials were transported to the mountaintop using gondolaline material carts and helicopter hoists. Despite harsh winter conditions, PCLConstruction Management Inc. completed the deck build during the off-season toavoid disrupting summer tourism, keeping gondola operations and upper terminalservices running throughout.

This location presented unique challenges: high altitude, extreme seasonal temperature changes, heavy snowfall, and high tourist foot traffic. Many materials struggle under such conditions, especially natural wood. Accoya was selected for its combination of authentic wooden aesthetics, sustainable credentials, and exceptional performance.

Thanks to its patented acetylation process, Accoya is highly dimensionally stable — it barely shrinks, swells, or warps —and is extremely durable in all weather. This made it the ideal choice for a structure expected to endure intense environmental stress while maintaining its form and beauty over time.
